Kathmandu: The Gen-Z protest in Kathmandu escalated into violence on Monday, leaving 19 people dead and more than 600 injured, including over 200 security personnel, according to officials.
Security Forces Among the Injured
Deputy Inspector General of Police Binod Ghimire, spokesperson for Nepal Police, confirmed that 178 Nepal Police personnel and 30 Armed Police Force members were injured while attempting to control the situation. Of them, 38 police officers are undergoing treatment. Many were hurt by stones, bricks, and glass bottles thrown by protesters.
Clashes at Federal Parliament Building
Clashes erupted after demonstrators attempted to storm the Federal Parliament Building in New Baneshwor. Protesters vandalized the Parliament wall and set fire to a police quarters and an Armed Police Force ambulance stationed nearby. Security forces were deployed throughout the day to prevent further breaches.
Rising Civilian Casualties
Authorities confirmed that 19 civilians were killed and 421 injured nationwide during the unrest. Injured protesters and security personnel are being treated at Nizamati Hospital, Everest Hospital, Trauma Center, and Bir Hospital. Four journalists covering the protest were also wounded.
Medical Emergency
Medical teams struggled to handle the surge in casualties. Dr. Pushparaj Rijal of the Federal Parliament Secretariat said providing first aid to the injured security forces was difficult amid continuous clashes. Those seriously injured were later referred to the Nepal Police Hospital for advanced treatment.
Growing Unrest
The Gen-Z movement, driven by young people opposing the government’s social media ban, corruption, and nepotism, has rapidly gained momentum. What began as a peaceful protest at Maitighar Mandala spiraled into nationwide unrest, raising concerns of further instability if dialogue is not initiated.
